Haas VF1High Speed CNC Machining at Macomb College
This video combines several High Speed Machining projects performed at Macomb Community College using Haas machines and a variety of exotic indexable and solid carbide cutting tools donated by Iscar Metals. Material types range from 4140 to P-20 tool steel donated by PCS. All machining was performed at Macomb College’s Haas Technical Edcation Center.

CNC milling machine makes a model cannon wheel
Haas VF20 3 axis milling machine making a spoked model cannon wheel. Cool circular interpolations. This kind of stuff makes me drool. It is a lot more fun to watch it 5 times faster than it actually happened.

Mikini 1610L CNC machining center – Circular interpolating in 1045 carbon steel
This video features the Mikini 1610L CNC machining center circular interpolating a 1.660″ hole in 1045 carbon steel using a 3/8 carbide end mill. 35% Spindle load. This part is for a press fit application on precision ground rod stock, circular to better than 0.001″ TIR, with the whole part slightly eccentric on the shaft. Compared to 1018, consider that 1045 has over double the carbon content of 1018 (0.45% vs 0.18%) and Machinability of 1045 is 19% compared to 1018’s 35%. Aluminum soft jaw also machined on the 1610L. The 1610L CNC machine was designed to be owned, operated and maintained by engineers, business owners and R&D shops. You can purchase this machine for $11,999. It runs on single phase power, is fully enclosed, and only takes 3′x5′ of space. Perfect for your garage, small business, R&D lab or home shop.

Cool Stuff at Dunwoody: Haas CNC Lathe
Haas Automation, Inc. donated a CNC lathe to Dunwoody earlier this year. Here’s a quick look at it in action with help from Machining Technology Senior Instructor Brian Nelsen and one of his students (who preferred to remain anonymous). Please note that the shield was left open in order to capture a better view. That’s not standard operating procedure. We don’t recommend running a CNC lathe like that for normal use. And anytime you are doing machining work — wear safety glasses.

Some of my students made a few dozen of these model Space Needles.They handed them out to people visiting the machine shop during a Sno-Isle Skills Center open house on Thursday, February 5.
Safety note: Removing metal chips by hand can be dangerous for some metals. This piece was made from soft aluminum. Many other metals, especially stainless steel, produce very tough, razer sharp chips that should never be touched by hand.
The machine making the model Space Needle is a Haas CNC Toolroom Lathe, model TL-1 owned by Everett Community College. The shop is a high school tech lab during the day and a community college tech lab in the evenings. (This arrangement is a good use of taxpayer dollars.)

If you are like me videos of CNC machines make you drool. This video shows the G-code the machine is using as it runs the part. The finished part is a puzzle piece with an inscription I made for my wife.
The inscription in case you miss it says: Camille, You are the “Key Piece” in our family. Programed in Surfcam by Joshua Chapman (less than a week after he first used Surfcam). Hey, no one else is going to brag for me, right?

CNC Milling Machine Project – Sno-Isle Skills Center
This is a small project being made on a Haas 3-axis CNC (computer numerical control) milling machine in my high school precision machining class. I made a few dozen of these “plaques” and handed them out to visitors of the Sno-Isle Skills Center open house on February 5, 2009.
Of course I am one of the best students in Tom’s Precision Machining class at Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center in Everett, WA
