Why does my machine not start straight away?

When I press the start button on my machine, it doesn’t start until the gearbox makes a clunk, then it kicks into life. Why does it do this?

My machine is a Boko CNC mill.

It needs a service

ideally a machine should straight away. but there is nothing ideal in the world. a machine starts only after overcoming friction, requring the exact speed between machine parts and getting sufficient heat.

By "start" do you mean when the main spindle starts to rotate???

    Need more info
Hows the finish? is it holding size? does this happen in all speed ranges( M40 M41 M42 etc )???

It is inherited problem of almost any gear box, it is called backlash. Simply speaking it is the loose between the teeth of the gears. Very modern and precision gear boxes are made with ant-backlash technology. Most of the time it will be very precision machining of the gears, combine with double gear on the some shaft that are pre-loaded in both directions.
