Electrical Noise in facility 115 VAC line?

Our manufacturing facility has about 10 large CNC machines. I think one (or more) of the machines is creating noise on our 115 VAC circuit. This cause the uninterpretable power supplies (UPS) to click on an off through out most of the day. When the shop guys go home, the UPSs stop clicking. Any suggestions on how to isolate the problem and reduce the noise induced into the system?

this is usually very complex to pin point

you need the expertise of an electrician with proper monitoring tools

HELP!! How do you extract aluminum chips from brass turnings?

I run a small CNC Transfer Machine shop and I have 8000lbs of Brass turnings that have trace amounts of aluminum chips in it and I need to extract the aluminum out so that I can get full value for the brass. One of my set up tech’s forgot to clean out the machine before switching to brass and now I have aluminum in with my brass. The problem is this. If I send this brass to the smelter than I will loose half the value if it is contaminated with any other elements. Pure clean brass turnings is worth $1.40/lb (8000×1.40= $11,200.00) If I send it with aluminum I’ll only get $5,600.00. Please help. Neither metals are magnetic and aluminum doesn’t float.

Using magnets.

What makes a college degree more important than practical knowledge and experience?

I have been offered a position as a manufacturing engineer. The origional offer was on par with the value of my knowledge and experience. I have been in the buisness for fifteen years now and am at the point of running the shop where I work now. I design the parts, assemblies, and make detailed blueprints of them using solidworks. I program all of the CNC machines in the building and set up the process sheets and system information. I also solve a majority of the day to day problems in the manufacturing department. The next day I recieved a second offer that was 11,000 less becouse they realized that I never finnished college. They still want me to take the same job, same responsibilities, and at the same time have no question of my ability to handle the position. Why should I accept less from a potential employer becouse I don’t have a flashy piece of parchment with some fancy caligriphy etched on its surface. Besides college is suposed to prepare you for what I already do.

To be quite honest I am not sure why, but I was in a similar situation, until I recently graduated college. I have not been assigned any other duties at work
nor was I given a raise until I asked for one and threatened to leave. I have asked several others in my field this same question and one supervisor told me that getting the degree proves that you are committed and have the drive to fulfill your goals (although I do not necessarily agree with that I do some some valid points in it). I think with the extensive experience that you have I would respectfully decline unless they could give me a real reason as to why they are now offering you less. Good Luck and my well wishes are with you.

cnc programing?

heres the delema im writting G-code for cnc programs and in order to "proof" the program i have to run all the way down into the shop and test run it on the cnc machine what i was wondering is if there was a program out there that will give me a view of my cutter path and also alert me to any programing errors such as multiple decimals or invalid arc lenghths or spaces where they should not be

thanks

Pro engineer along with pro mechanica and their associated programs allow you to create your object and put it through and animated simulated run for a CNC machine.

Why would you demagnetize a building?

Somebody said that the place I work was going to be demagnetized.I work at a battery warehouse and all the manufacturing buildings at the main facility are also supposedly set to be demagnetized as well. I know why airplanes and submarines would need to be demagnetized? But what is the purpose of demagnetizing a building? Or is this a false statement on somebody’s part. The only thing I can think of is it has something to do with 3-phase current? As far as I know all the PLC’s and computers run on AC. I know maintaining DC power for computers and production machines is complicated so probably 3-phase current is being used. I know when I worked at a machine shop the networking running to the CNC Lathes would always stop working because the place wasn’t grounded properly. Any information would be helpful to me, because, as of now, this makes no sense to me at all.

Hey, that sounds like an easy way to make money. I guess if you get lost in the building, your compass will point in the right direction! But, why would you need to worry about that in a battery factory?

How much do Honda plant machinists make on average?

We have a new Honda plant coming to Indiana and my husband is thinking of applying. Does anyone work for Honda in the machine shop division (he’s a CNC programmer with 17 years experience) and if so, can we ask an AVERAGE (without prying too much) pay? Thanks!

I work at the honda plant in Ohuio as a CNC and also cross trained in set- up and dies . MY pay is pretty much public record – $28.13 plus benefits and retirement ,medical , etc etc . All the overtime you can handle also . Good company to work for too .

How to continue receiving unemployment benefits in Ohio while working part time?

I am laid off from a machine shop where I started in CNC Operation and set-ups but quickly moved up to quality control, CMM operation, and DMIS programming. I made pretty good money but have been laid off. Unemployment isn’t enough but I can’t find a job making enough to make it worth while to get off unemployment. Is there a way I can work part time to supplement my unemployment and still collect until I can find another job in my field?

you can continue to search for your good job but mean while you can start your own business also which can help you to secure your future.

I am also doing the same thing trying to secure my future.

You just have to spend some times to understand how this business works and will provide you secure royalty income in future

Honestly speaking if you are looking to earn immediate then I will not suggest you to have look at this.

But if you have passions and good contacts and want to secure your future then think about this

shoot me mail on pmistry80@yahoo.com

I can explain you more about this.

I would like to know what the average weight is for an average machine in a machine tool shop?

Know this is difficult – I was thinking of a CNC lathe or something like it – would it be one ton, two? I need to calculate shipping based on weight – I can visualise the size but not weight

I’m a CNC machinist, hard to say an average, depending on lathe or mill, big or small, I run mazak quik turns, which i think are about 3000 pounds.
I’ve worked on other lathes that were in the 5000 & 6000 range.
I’ve also worked on mills that were 10 – 15000 pounds.
If you know the make and model of the machine, maybe do a google search for the mfg. and check their dimensions and weight.

How do I find work for a CNC Mill?

I am thinking about starting my own machine shop business. I was just curious about how you find customers to get work for the machines. Also, if you have any advice in starting a business let me know.

Typically you would know someone who has work needed to be done, or that is too busy, and is willing to job out some of the overflow, or already jobs out the parts, they can not make.
Contract Bids from Defense and Aero-space Co. are good, but hard to get. Web Sites like www.machinetools.com and Emachinetools.com will allow you (Free) to post adds saying that you have machines, and need work.
Advise on starting a shop. Purchase machines that can do more than you think you will need, do to the fact we usually estimate low. Also, purchase only good, new machines, and from reputable dealers or the manufacture. Do not get cough up in leasing three machines when you only need one, due to a fast talking salesman. Get good Cad Software and be Cad/Cam Savvy. Always keep learning, and be open minded to the customers point of view, and the way the do the job.
I sell machinery, both CNC and Conventional, so if you ever have any questions, you may always contact me

where can i find rental space for a cnc manufacturing shop?

there will be inspection equipment and cnc machines involved

Plenty of places, probably could check the paper or craigslist, a Realtor would know. Is their an industrial park nearby, that would be a good place to check and do a drive by. Look in the phone book to see where similar businesses are located.
I couple of important things will be to have 3 phase power and make sure you won’t have any zoning problems.

How can I remove graphite dust from a circuit board without wrecking the board?

I have two circuit boards that I removed from a CNC machine. The machine shop where it is recently machined a block of graphite, which the shop owner now regrets. Graphite dust filled the air and got all over everything. It also got into a lot of electronics, which is bad since graphite is electrically conductive. Fortunately, the boards I removed hadn’t exploded yet so I have some hope of repairing them. The first thing I need to do is remove the dust without further damaging the boards. I’m wondering if anyone out there has had experience with this and if so, what is a good solvent for this? Should I just use my usual soap and water?
thanks, deflagrated. that method works great for loose dust. this is actually stuck to the board. i’m not sure what is causing it to be so sticky, but it’s probably some kind of oil, since this board is from an EDM machine in a machine shop. these boards were right above a cooling fan so the dust was blown onto the boards. the loose dust blew by, leaving only the sticky stuff for me to deal with.

see what you can do with canned air.
If you can’t get everything off with air, rinsing with alcohol will be much better than rinsing with water as it will not cause rust and evaporate very quickly, leaving no moisture behind. Soap and water isn’t good for any electronics.

How much does it cost to CNC machine a part?

It is a 304 stainless disk with a threaded hole.
Fairly large 58mm wide by 20mm high.
That’s about it.

For a quantity of 100 I’m getting a quote of 11.49 ea.
I know metals are expensive now, but As per the shop, only about $4.50 of that is the steel.
Seems like $7 ea. is A LOT for machining.

Is this too much to pay?
What is a fair price?

Without knowing the tolerances it’s not possible to comment on your quoted price.

The prices of materials, CNC equipment itself, programmers, operators, QC, packing, insurance, benefits, utilities, all add into that price. And gez- let the guy make a profit.

For even a small shop your $1149 sale is not going to be much of a money maker- probably they are hoping it leads to other work.

swisscube epfl

EPFL SwissCube CNC and electroerrosion machining.
The machining of the SwissCube structure starts from a full aluminum bloc. The First step in producing the monobloc frame structure consists in milling the six side faces into a cube thanks to the use of a CNC MIlling Machine. This work is done in the machine shop of mechanical engineering at the EPFL.

The second step is the cutting of the internal volume by electro-erosion machining. This process cuts metal by producing a rapid series of repetitive electrical discharges. These electrical discharges are passed between a very thin wire serves as the electrode and the piece of metal being machined. The path of the wire is controlled by computer. The electro-erosion task is carried out by the machine shop of the material science institute at EPFL.

Setting up a machine shop in Mumbai, Should I start off with a Manual Lathe or a CNC machine?

Me and my friend are planning to set up a Machine Shop in Mumbai. We dont have much background experience in the field but we are quick learners…..but we are confused over one point. Some have advised us to start off with a small machine shop with a manual lathe and drill machine and build up from there….whereas others claim that manual lathe is old technology so its better to invest in a CNC lathe right away…we have an investment of about 25 – 30 lakhs….any suggestion from you guys will be helpful…thanks

You have to start a strong start, so bring both. If worried about expenses, then start with refurbished CNC

working at a cnc machine shop?

I just got hired to work at a cnc machine shop , they make custom parts for all different kinds of stuff. I have no expierience in cnc machining, i just told him i was good at computers. what will i most likely start out doing at the shop?

They will start you off with operating a machine to get use to the environment and to see if it appeals to you as well as you to them. Then they will start teaching you to make adjustments to the machine to get you familiar to the controls. In time you will learn programming as well as how to evaluate how a part is to made.
If they do not have a formal training or apprenticeship you might want to take some night courses at a local collage in basic machine shop to learn the metal cutting process.
I have been in this business 28 years and teach classes for trainees and I still learn things most days.
I hope it works for you and you like it, good luck.

Getting a CNC shop to machine model engine plans to a kit?

I need to know the feasibility of getting a CNC shop to machine all the parts for a model engine into a bolt together kit if I gave them the plans for it.

I have actually tried this, but it was VERY expensive..and ended up buying a pr-assembled engine..Just make sure that you use a quality shop with a high quality reputation, as all parts need to be precise…Most will do this, if you can pay the price..
